Orchids Bloom along Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s “Orchid Walk”

LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, FL — March 31, 2016 — A pedestrian friendly atmosphere called Orchid Walk is being created along Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, as up to 250 orchids in eight varieties have been added to the trees between A1A and the Intracoastal Waterway. The Town has completed the first phase, attaching the orchids to trees and palms lining the four shopping plazas along Commercial Boulevard. Plans are to add more of the flowering plants in the next six months, provided the initial attachment process is a success. Dendrobiums have been affixed to the trees, along with Brassavola Nodosa and Schomburgkia. Phaelenopsis has been placed throughout the walk; for additional variety and color, Oncidium, Encyclia, Epidendrum and Cattleya will adorn other trees. The self-guided walk was designed to give residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy their beauty while exploring the unique shops and restaurants along Commercial Boulevard. For gardeners, of course, Orchid Walk offers an opportunity to find inspiration and new ideas. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is hosting a special event on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, with the opening ceremony at 6:00 PM at the Parrotfish Plaza located at 236 Commercial Boulevard, where the LBTS Chamber of Commerce will host and Minto Villas by the Sea will provide refreshments. The festivities continue as guests will be encouraged to stroll and enjoy live music in each of the plazas until 7:30 PM. Retailers will be open to welcome those visiting the plazas. “Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s outdoor and public spaces are one of the most beautiful in the Fort Lauderdale area. We are very excited about Orchid Walk not only for its beauty, but its gift to engage residents, visitors and businesses along the walk,” said Scot Sasser, Mayor of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. The project is a joint venture between the Town of Lauderdale-By-The Sea and the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Garden Club. Orchid breeder Tony Millet, a member of the South Florida Orchid Society and the Bonnet House’s resident hybridizer/seedling grower is consulting on the project; the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society has also played an instrumental role. Orchid Walk has also been financially supported by LBTS Property Owners’ Association, the Women’s Club of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, The LBTS Garden Club, Flynn Engineering and other individual supporters.
